Each year over a hundred bluegrass pickers would descend upon
downtown Arthur forming and
reforming groups on all the corners to play
their favorite bluegrass songs. These pickers and grinners would
come from everywhere in the state of Illinois to honor the memory of
Chet Kingery by playing the type of music Chet was known for.
The Chet Kingery Memorial Bluegrass Jam started two years ago as a
side event to Arthur's Downtown BBQ Competition. The first year
consisted of 8 bbq'ers and 50 bluegrass players. The second year
the BBQ became sanctioned as a state championship and word about the
Chet Kingery Memorial got around to other bluegrass players. The
second year had 45 big rig championship bbq'ers and over a hundred
bluegrass players.
The third year grew even more and while BBQ and
bluegrass go together perfectly the events grew so large that the town
of Arthur has decided to turn them into separate events. However, even
with good jammer participation in 2007, they all missed the BBQ. So,
back we go to combine the two events again.
The Arthur Downtown Merchants Committee is proud to announce that the Chet Kingery Memorial Bluegrass Jam will again be held on October 10 2009 in downtown Arthur, Illinois.
IF you come to jam, we will have a main jam registration tent set up on Vine St . BE SURE TO REGISTER AS A JAMMER! When you register you will receive Free food coupons for BBQ and drinks for two, and free raffle tickets for our Guitar Drawing. We are encouraging jammers that can to come over an Friday evening, jam for a while in Dorothy Jurgens Park downtown and then head over to our Hog Roast VIP dinner to fill up afterwards. No registration required, just ask around when you get here for directions.
Bring your guitars, banjos, bass fiddles, mandolins, or any other instrument that is favorite and join in on the fun and jam with the folks. Plan to have a crowd of people, a whole lot of good bbq, and a lot of bluegrass fun all over the downtown.
